Frequently asked questions

What is included in Planttubby?

  • One 20L ready to plant (including potting mix) bucket called a Planttubby.

What potting soil is included in Planttubby?

  • A Unique Potting Mix (Not Soil): Standard potting mixes are either too dense or to course and will not wick water properly. Planttubby comes with a very unique mix for optimal wicking and aeration that contains peat, potting mix, compost mix and perlite as well as a small amount of Epson salt and lime for boosting healthy root growth.

What is the initial watering process?

  • Initial Top-Watering (through the whole in the lid). Important: To “activate” the system, drench the potting mix through the hole in the lid for the first 3 watering sessions and leave it for 30 minutes, allowing the extra water to “weep” through the hole. Use the watering tube only for watering thereafter. For the first 1–3 weeks after planting (depending on the speed of root growth of the specific plant), water from the top to ensure the roots grow deep enough to benefit from the wicking zone. Once your plant is settled, you only need to fill the reservoir as explained through the fill tube.

How often should I water my Planttubby?

  • It all depends on the size of the plant, the type of plant, the weather, the location of your Planttubby etc. During peak heat (30°C+), a large plant like a tomato may empty the reservoir every 3–6 days. In cooler weather, it can last up to 2 weeks. Monitor the reservoir and refill every 1–2 weeks depending on the plant size, weather and water required by the specific plant. Slowly add water through the fill pipe until water starts pouring through the little overflow hole.

How long will the soil last in my Planttubby?

  • Depending on the conditions, which plant you are growing in you Planttubby and the size of the plant, the soil will last for 2 to 3 years. As the soil settles over time, add a good organic potting mix (or worm castings) of your choice through the top hole in the lid if need be. Some of our initial “test Planttubbies” are properly maintained and soil added through the top hole as need be. They are still functional and in use with their initial soil and setup for over 5 years now.

Can I reuse my Planttubby and can I replace the soil?

  • It depends on if this can be done without disturbing the water reservoir area and especially the wicking area (the bottom half of your Planttubby). Plants will over time have their roots growing vigorously into the wicking area and removing an old plant or replacing the soil will disrupt this area and cause your Planttubby to become nonfunctional. If need be, open the lid and carefully replace the top 10cm of soil with a good organic potting mix or worm castings. Replace the lid and ensure it is properly seated.

How much water does the Planttubby reservoir actually hold?

  • The Planttubby can hold roughly between 4 to 6 litres of water when the reservoir is filled.

How do I fertilize?

  • Avoid putting liquid fertilizer directly into the reservoir, as it can become “manky” and smell and may also cause buildup at the overflow hole. Add a small amount of fertilizer through the top hole in the lid and pour some water on it.

Why the cap on the fill tube?

  • The end cap prevents insects like mosquitoes from breeding in the reservoir and should always be placed back into position after a watering session.

Which type of plants should not be planted in a Planttubby?

  • Planttubby is not suitable for plants that require their soil to dry out completely like most succulents or cacti.

Where to place my Planttubby?

  • Planttubby should be placed wherever it is most suitable for the plant in it. Avoiding direct sunlight especially during midday will prolong the life span of your Planttubby. Also keep in mind that water will spill from watering and from the over flow, so do not place your Planttubby where stain marks or water spills will be an issue.
